Casa Angelica is a home for children and young adults with developmental disabilities, owned and operated by the Canossian
Daughters of Charity since 1967.

Casa Angelica is licensed as an Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ICF-IID).

The Canossian Sisters have provided a family centered program, since 1967, with personalized Active Treatment Plans designed to enhance each individual’s unique gifts through spiritual, educational and social
development.

 

The vision is to enable the children to grow up in an environment that is loving, safe and comfortable; “a reflection of the traditional family.”

Veronica is the "fashion queen" of Casa Angelica and can happily spend an hour looking at celebrity fashion magazines; Though she doesn't complain, I know that Veronica has not had an easy life. She faces great physical discomfort every day and is unable to communicate succinctly what's bothering her. She has lost people she deeply cared about and on whom she depended. Veronica has this type of prodigious insight and I hope always to live the lessons she has taught me. In turn, I hope that she embraces my steadfast belief that she is capable of anything she wishes and has great gifts to share. I look forward to a lifetime of friendship with Veronica.

I'm so honored to be able to say that Ronnie is my friend, he is one of the greatest people you will ever meet. Ronnie is a great role model to all that meets him. He has been through a lot in his life, and no matter what life throws at him he is always happy. He is always forgiving, loving, and a great friend to all. I think the biggest thing that he has taught me is to always smile even through the tears. When I'm having a bad day or feeling sad about something, all I have to do is talk to Ronnie and when smiles at me, I'm suddenly happy again. All of the young people at Casa Angelica have taught me something about life. They are all so special, and I'm so thankful that I have them all in my life!

One day, Shawn and I were in the room together, and he was supposed to be my special helper. After the job was done, one of the staff members told Shawn to say "Thank you Mickey," I knew that Shawn could talk a little but to hear him say those words, "Thank you Mickey" was the coolest thing in the world. I mean the hair on the back of my neck stood up and a chill just ran right through me. It's not every day that one of our special children at Casa Angelica can say thank you for anything we do for them, so when it happens you must treasure it.

It was Patrick's birthday and I told him that I would sing to him, "Stranger's in the Night" And I did and he loved it. It was so cute! I love cooking and spoiling them with their favorite snacks.

SARAH

Sweet   Adorable   Rambunctious   Adorable   Happy

Close your eyes and imagine sitting in a beautiful, sunlit garden enjoying the warmth of the sun on your cheeks.  It is a warm New Mexico day in the Land of Enchantment and you are dreaming of a large glass of freshly squeezed lemonade, a perfect addition to your afternoon.  Most of us are able to walk into our kitchen to get the glass of lemonade and a fresh baked chocolate chip cookie that is in the cookie jar. We then wander back into the garden and enjoy our afternoon snack.  Sarah is challenged by not being able to walk and is heard calling out to the staff at Casa Angelica, “Bite, Bite, more”!  A beautiful smile appears as a Direct Care Staff answers her request, there is a twinkle in Sarah’s eyes and she enjoys her afternoon snack.  Sarah is a seventeen-year-old young girl that loves life and is known by many as “one” of the Princesses at Casa.  She came to live at Casa Angelica when she was 8 years old.  Sarah attends Rio Grande Highschool and loves being the center of attention, both at school and at home.  She loves music and is all smiles when in the swimming pool.  Sarah has some freedom of movement when in the pool and is often seen with a huge smile on her face saying “Go and Yeah”.  Sarah’s vocabulary has increased in recent years and she can be heard saying: Yum Yum, bite, eat, baby, Mamma, go and more.  Sarah belongs to the Road Runner family at Casa and loves interacting with staff.  She loves dressing up and getting her hair done; truly a girly girl! Sister Connie is one of Sarah’s favorite people and Sarah enjoys all the one-on-one attention.  Sarah’s smile lights up the room and she enjoys visits from her mom, brother and grandparents. 

So next time you are enjoying that glass of lemonade, think of Sarah and the blessings each of us share!

Patrick

Opp0rtunities….

Imagine the sound of soft rain from a rain stick and loud thunder when the rain stick is shaken or the strumming of a guitar and the soft rhythm of drums in the background.  A young man listens intently with large green eyes wide open.  As the music falls into rhythm Patrick takes big, deep breaths preparing to vocalize and slowly relaxes his limbs.  A big sigh…preparing to sing.  Large, big sounds come forth, “BUH” and little sounds “Uh-Uh-Uh” …. he knows when it is his turn to sing. the music therapist sings “Patrick” he takes a deep breath, blinks and vocalizes again.  A favorite part of music therapy includes Patrick holding the guitar with a gentle strumming of his fingers and palm, a look of contentment as music comes to an end for the week.

 

As a young boy who experienced a struggle for life and the fear of the unknown Patrick held onto life with courage making room for love in his world. A very special man that came into Patrick’s young life is referred to as Pops by everyone at Casa.  This individual along with Casa Angelica has given Patrick opportunities each and every day.  Opportunities to live in a world that is safe and loving, opportunities to go out in the world to experience what other young people experience—going to school, to the zoo, playing T-ball, volunteering at work sites and yes flirting with the girls. His gorgeous big eyes attract all the girls, of course we keep the flirting from Pops, it is our secret😊

 

Patrick has embraced life and gives each of us the example to live life to the fullest, opening our eyes to see love all around us.  We can embrace this love and together accept new opportunities each day, giving of our gifts and talents and to enrich Patrick’s life and the lives of the other young people living at Casa Angelica.
